Accutane Sparks Worldwide Concern
Accutane side effects have sparked concern on a worldwide basis, but especially in the U.S. after a possible link between Accutane use and depression and suicide has been debated for years. The FDA told a congressional hearing that the agency had redoubled its efforts to prevent Accutane from being prescribed in instances of mild acne due to its risk outweighing the drugs benefits.

While studies have failed to find a direct link between Accutane and suicide in patients, the possibility of it still remains strong as reports of Accutane suicides and drastic mood changes continue to be made. The possibility of Accutane triggering negative psychological effects has been unable to be cancelled out as of yet.

American doctors, as well as Accutane manufacturer Roche Products, has been advised to make its policies on Accutane more strict in order to prevent Accutane birth defects from occurring. Now, every woman that is going to be put on Accutane treatment must have a monthly pregnancy test prior to receiving the next medicine refill. Accutane has been linked to severe birth defects such as deformities in the facial, bone, heart, and lungs of roughly 50% of babies exposed to Accutane before birth.

Australia is now requiring that Accutane manufacturer and generic Accutane manufacturers include “clear descriptions of the symptoms of depression” in patient information. The FDA has advised prescribers that “Awareness of signs and symptoms may save your patient’s life,” as well as warning doctors saying, “It may be difficult to decide whether erratic behavior may warrant psychiatric evaluation, especially if that behavior seems to be age-appropriate in a teenager. However, as with any specialized problem, you may identify patients who seem to need more than dermatological care, and you may need to refer them to a specialist.”
