Accutane Maker Accused of Contributing to Suicide of Teenage Boy
The parents of a teenage boy who threw himself in front of a train
are now striking back at the makers of Accutane, an extremely powerful
acne medication. The Accutane lawsuit alleges the company with negligence,
fraud and deceit, and medical negligence, as well as other charges.
The 14-year old California boy had been using Accutane for over
a six-month period and he was described as a “popular, healthy,
happy well-adjusted 14-year old teenager with no prior history or
symptoms of mental health problems.”
The family filed the Accutane lawsuit and is seeking a jury trial
and unspecified general and punitive damages. According to the Accutane
lawsuit, the suicide was the consequence of using Accutane. The
Santa Clara Country Medical Examiner’s report in November
2002, it concluded that, “A possible side effect of this drug
at high levels is depression. The actual levels in this case could
not be tested because of inability to preserve the specimen in order
to avoid breakdown.”
The Accutane lawsuit cited over 500 reports of suicide, suicide
attempts, and suicidal ideas involving Accutane that have been recorded
by national and international health agencies. After the FDA continued
receiving reports of adverse events including suicide and suicide
attempts amongst Accutane users, the agency warned the Accutane
maker and Accutane labeling changes were made to read “Accutane
may cause depression, psychosis, and rarely suicide ideation, suicide
attempts and suicide.”
